Toyota is turning heads in China’s electric car market once again — this time with the Toyota bZ5 EV, a sleek, affordable, and tech-packed electric vehicle that starts at just $18,000. In a country where electric cars are growing fast and competition is tough, this launch could be a game-changer for Toyota.

You might remember the bZ3C, a sharp-looking coupe-style SUV shown off at the Beijing Auto Show last year. That concept car has now evolved into the Toyota bZ5 EV, ready for real-world roads and real buyers.

The first production unit rolled off the line on May 16, 2025, at Toyota’s new energy plant in partnership with FAW (First Auto Works). This moment also marked the factory’s 12 millionth vehicle, a big milestone and a symbol of Toyota’s deeper push into the Chinese EV space.

According to executives like Bi Wenquan, the bZ5 is a bold move to help Toyota “catch up” and “keep pace” with the Chinese market, which is now the largest EV market in the world.

One of the biggest changes with the Toyota bZ5 EV is its focus on local design and needs. FAW Toyota’s General Manager, Fujiwara Hiroyuki, made it clear: the brand’s new strategy is to be “global and more Chinese.” That means making cars that speak directly to the taste, needs, and tech-savvy lifestyle of the modern Chinese driver.

A Big Car for a Small Price

Priced from 130,000 yuan (about $18,000), the Toyota bZ5 EV brings surprising size and features for its cost.

Let’s talk dimensions:

  • Length: 4,780 mm
  • Width: 1,866 mm
  • Height: 1,510 mm
  • Wheelbase: 2,880 mm

This puts it almost neck-and-neck in size with the Tesla Model Y, but at less than half the price. That’s a big deal — especially in a market where cost matters more than ever.

Powerful Battery and better mileage

Toyota is playing it smart under the hood too. The Toyota bZ5 EV is powered by BYD’s Blade LFP batteries, well known for their safety, durability, and solid energy density. You get two battery choices:

  • 65.28 kWh for up to 550 km (342 miles) range
  • 73.98 kWh for up to 630 km (391 miles) range (CLTC cycle)

This puts it right in the sweet spot for daily commuting, family trips, or even light-duty ride-sharing — without breaking the bank or needing to stop and charge too often.

Step inside the Toyota bZ5 EV, and you’ll find a cabin that’s both clean and clever. The 15.6-inch central touchscreen takes center stage, with a user-friendly layout that feels modern without being too flashy.

But it’s not just looks. The bZ5 comes equipped with Momenta 5.0, a next-gen intelligent driving system. It offers over 30 smart functions, including:

  • City and highway driving assist
  • Automated parking help
  • Lane keeping
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Voice command features

Toyota’s clearly putting a lot of focus into making sure drivers feel safe, in control, and connected at all times.

What Makes the Toyota bZ5 EV Different?

There are lots of EVs out there. So what makes the Toyota bZ5 EV special?

  • Affordability: $18,000 for a midsize EV with over 600 km range is a steal.
  • Big Space: It’s not a small city car. It’s roomy enough for families.
  • Smart Features: The cockpit tech and driving systems feel like something from a car twice the price.

Toyota has been slower than other carmakers to jump into fully electric vehicles. But the bZ series — which stands for “Beyond Zero” — is changing that.

While some of Toyota’s global EVs, like the upcoming bZ5X, are expected to cost upwards of $50,000, the bZ5 EV is a signal that Toyota is ready to compete in the budget EV arena too. And with China’s EV sales rising month after month, now is the time to do it.

President Koji Sato summed it up best:

“If our products can be loved by Chinese consumers, they will surely be favored by the global market.”

In other words — crack the Chinese market, and you win the global EV game.

The Toyota bZ5 EV may not be a luxury car or a performance monster. But it’s practical, affordable, and tech-forward — exactly what a fast-changing market like China needs right now.
