If you’re planning to sell your old car, don’t rush into handing over the keys just yet. There’s one big thing you need to get right — the documents required to sell a used car in India.

From RC and PUC to PAN cards and RTO forms, there’s a checklist you need to follow. Missing even one document could delay the deal or, worse, lead to future legal issues.

Why Documents Matter in a Used Car Sale

A car sale isn’t just about money and a handshake. It’s a legal transfer of ownership. Having the correct documents for car resale:

  • Speeds up the sale process
  • Protects you from future legal troubles
  • Builds trust with the buyer
  • Helps with smooth RC transfer

Car-Related Documents

These are papers that relate directly to the vehicle you’re selling.

Registration Certificate (RC)

  • This is the main proof of ownership.
  • If it’s damaged or missing, apply for a duplicate RC using Form 26 after filing an FIR.
  • The RC must be updated with the current owner’s name and correct chassis number.

PUC Certificate (Pollution Under Control)

  • Confirms that the car meets pollution standards.
  • Valid for 6 months for most cars.
  • Electric cars are exempt.
  • Costs about ₹80 to ₹100.
  • Mandatory for resale and RC transfer.

Car Insurance Policy

  • A valid policy is needed for ownership transfer.
  • Can be comprehensive or third-party.
  • If expired, you can buy a short-term third-party insurance just to complete the process.

Optional but Useful

  • Invoice/Bill of Sale: Original purchase invoice strengthens your ownership claim.
  • Owner’s Manual: Handy for the new buyer to understand features.
  • Service Records: Shows how well the car was maintained. Helps in getting a better price.

Identity Proof Documents

These verify your identity and are often needed along with RTO forms for selling car.

PAN Card

  • Mandatory for tax compliance.
  • Submit a self-attested copy.
  • If you don’t have one, fill and submit Form 60 instead.

Address Proof

Address Proof Can be any government-issued ID like:

  • Aadhaar Card
  • Passport
  • Voter ID
  • Driving License

Some RTOs accept electricity bills or rent agreements.

Passport-Size Photos

  • Carry at least 2 photos.
  • Needed for attaching to RTO documents like Form 29 and 30.

RTO Forms for Selling Car

These forms help you legally transfer the ownership to the new buyer at the RTO.

Form 28 – No Objection Certificate (NOC)

  • Declares there are no loans or pending dues on the car.
  • Needed especially for interstate car transfers.
  • Submit three copies to your RTO.

Form 29 – Notification of Ownership Transfer

  • Informs the RTO that you have sold the vehicle.
  • Submit two copies, signed by both parties.

Form 30 – Application for Ownership Transfer

  • This officially moves the car’s legal responsibilities from you to the buyer.
  • Must be submitted within 14 days of sale.

You can Download all these forms from the Parivahan portal. Make sure they are filled clearly and signed with photographs.

What Happens If You Miss a Document?

Skipping even a single required Document for selling car can:

  • Delay the RC transfer
  • Cause problems in getting the car re-registered
  • Keep you legally tied to the car even after it’s sold
  • Lead to future traffic fines or loan notices in your name

This is why completing the used car paperwork India requires is just as important as negotiating the best car selling price.
